The Nikon D3100 Digital SLR camera is capable of recording up to 899,100 images before repeating a combination of filename and folder location. This is achieved by using a file naming system which runs from 0001 to 9999 and folder naming running from 100 to 999. As the numbering of files and folders is automatic, the following information explains how the images on your camera will be named.
The default setting for all Nikon D-SLR cameras is to begin renumbering images from 0001 when a new folder is created (either manually or automatically), if the memory card is formatted in camera or a new memory card is inserted into the camera. For example if a card is removed and a new card inserted the camera will start numbering images from 0001 again.
The manner in which the camera determines file names or numbers cannot be manually altered (for example to differentiate one camera from another) with most Nikon DSLR cameras. Nikon's pro or pro-sumer cameras (D3, D2 series, D300 and D200) allow the three suffix letters of the file name can be manual be selected via the "File Naming" option of the Shooting menu.
